Broken Mirror

Bruce was born with a male body, but that never quite felt right to them. Deep down they knew they were supposed to be a girl, and growing up just made things more complicated. As adolescence continued, they remained deeply in the closet about it. They were afraid to come out to their friends, parents, and especially certain extended family members who had strong opinions.

One day, Bruce was looking at their face in the bedroom mirror. Unhappy with the emerging male characteristics in jawbone shape and forehead size, they pressed their hand against the glass to cover their face. When they did so, however, their hand went straight through like a ghost. Bruce tried to retract their arm, but their whole body was getting pulled forward. In a split second, they were launched into the mirror.

Bruce opened their eyes. Feeling groggy, they pulled themself up and looked back into the mirror. The male features on their face were gone. In fact, an entirely female body was looking back through the mirror. Bruce couldn't believe it. They immediately went to explore their new surroundings. The world seemed exactly the same. Same house, same furniture, same everything. The only apparent difference was that they were in a girl's body wearing girl clothes. A pink tank top and polka dot booty shorts. Not exactly my ideal wardrobe, Bruce thought. "Ready for breakfast, Brooke?" their mother's voice called out from downstairs. Brooke? So that would have been my name if I was born a girl.

"Just a second," Bruce replied. They walked back over to the mirror, thinking a million thoughts at once. Wait, if this mirror is the way back to my reality... Without hesitation, they punched the mirror and shattered it, severing the link back to their world forever. Bruce, now Brooke, headed downstairs to live her life as she intended.
