Stranded in the Apocalypse (Part 4): New Chores

Annoyed by the unexpected presence of the three men, Cameron trudged through the creek to meet them on the opposite. "What are you doing here?" he asked. "Have you been spying on me?"

"You failed to report for your shift on time," Gabriel answered. "Mother Regina wants to talk to you."

Cameron heart sank. He had completely lost track of time when bathing in the river. "Have I... have I been reassigned?" His mind began racing. After all of his hard work, was he still going to be forced to be a breeding vessel for the colony?

"That's not my prerogative." Gabriel looked stern, but with a modicum of concern. "Please come with us."

Cameron knew he had no chance of outrunning or outfighting these men, so he cooperated. They walked back towards camp, taking a more indirect route than the one he took on the way out. As they neared the outer defenses, a familiar but long-unheard sound approached from above. It was a helicopter. Everyone stumbled a bit as they looked up and lost their footing. It passed straight overhead at low altitude and continued onwards. No way, Cameron thought. I thought all aircraft went down when the grid collapsed.

Finally, they made it back to the colony. Cameron ignored the hungry eyes of the men in the camp and maintained his gaze forward. He knew what they were all thinking; they all wanted a chance with the pretty girl who remained an unclaimed woman. Gabriel left Cameron with his second-in-command and headed in a different direction. After another minute or two, he saw Mother Regina up ahead. She was waiting for him and she did not look happy.
